    Vivi comes from a class of wizards that practice dark and powerful magic, hence the Black Mages.

    chocobo on the contrary - while not vicious in their nature, they are able to carry a rider across wide ranges of land or water (in the case of Final Fantasy IX). i like them, but of course, still a rather basic mode of transport compared to airships.
