The movie is a prequel to the first game. In the first game you start out as the husband in silent hill looking for his wife.

In the movie it shows how His wife got in silent hill. and at the end of the movie he never finds his wife becuase they are in different Realms.
Actually, the movie wasn't a prequel. I'll say I've played all the games for credibility purposes: The first one is the one this story is based on. Harry Mason crashes his car, loses his daughter, meets Cybil, Lisa, Dahlia, etc...Silent Hill 2 revolves around James Sunderland who gets a letter from his dead wife, Mary. Not related to the first Silent Hill. In Silent Hill 3, the main character is Heather...to say more than that would be a spoiler, and I'm sure some people haven't played the game, but I will say it ties into the first game. Silent Hill 4, namely, The Room, focuses on a young man named Henry Townshend who gets trapped in his aparament from the inside. Probably the freakiest Silent Hill since it's so easy to relate to (Yeah, quite a few people live in apartments. Not only that, but Henry was pretty much just minding his own business, living somewhere, and one day he wakes up to find that there's chains on his door. I felt more bad for him than any of the other protagonists.) Incendentally, The Room gets more bad wrap than it should because it's loosely related to Silent Hill itself, but people still refuse to admit it's a good game.

That's the brief summary of the games. There's not really any prequel business going on here.
