5. Can I purchase a map?
1) I think I was level 7 or 8 when I did my first mission. I think by level 10 you should be ready to take on the first mission at the very least. Don't confuse missions for quests though. Quests you can do right from the get go. In fact, the moment you start the game you're given a quest to give an adventurer coupon to one of the NPCs in town. I recommend doing quests whenever you have time because you'll appreciate having done it gradually over a period of time rather than having to do a bunch of repetitive quests later on in order to build fame.

2) You can purchase weapons and armor from both NPC shops as well as from the AH. I'd say that in the beginning you can get a lot of the stuff you need from NPCs and it'll be a lot cheaper if you do. Of course some stuff you won't be able to buy in the shops and you'll have to get them from the AH, but I recommend that you *always* check with an NPC before bidding on something at the AH. The shops in Windurst are located in Port Windurst and Wind Walls I believe. Not entirely sure on this though.

3) Depends what level you are. By level 10 your should be fine wandering around the areas immediately outside Windurst. When you move into the next zone which are the Canyons, I would be careful until you get to lvl 15 or so. The biggest challenge for you will be to get the Mhaura and the ship to take you to Selbina when you hit 10 in order to go party in the dunes. I had to have someone escort me after I died trying to get there on my own. If you can't find someone to escort you, you either have to be very careful to avoid aggro, or you need to bring sneak oils with you.

4) He can learn spells by buying them from NPC stores or from the AH. Same as you do for other weapons. He should already have had the scroll of Stone in his inventory when he started. In order to learn the spell, all he needs to do is select and use that item in the inventory list.

5) Yes, you can buy maps from an NPC in Wind Woods I believe. Maps are fairly cheap, a couple hundred gil. A bit more for the maps that are further away from the starting city.

I recommend that you bookmark a site like Allakhazam because there's just *so* much information about FFXI that sometimes sites like Alla are a god send since you can look up items, quest, armor, whatever on the main site and get lots of job info in the forums.
