    Default Need advice

I recently purchased this game for the Xbox 360. I'm a Level 2 Hume Monk whose allegiance is with Windurst. So I have a couple of questions....

    1. What level should I be before I begin missions?

    2. How do I purchase weapons and armor?(Stupid question I know, but Windurst is so big I can't find any shops)

    3. Will I survive if I go to the areas beyond Windurst?

    4. This question is actually for my little brother, who is an Elvaan Black Mage. How can he learn spells?

    5. Can I purchase a map?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Penelo - "Yeah, you! The one reading this sig at this very moment!"
Vaan - "Interested in playing FFXII International Zodiac Job system?"
Ashe - "But you have no knowledge of the Japanese language?"
    Fran - "....We could help...."
Balthier - "That's right, Fran! Just click on Crossblades' thread on the very bottom of this signature and it will show you all license grid translations, magicks and tecks locations, and other changes that were made!"
Basch - "Don't forget though. Swap Magic is needed to play this game if you don't own a japanese PS2."
Vaan - "Also remember that if you played the original, you'll have an easier time playing the international version. We hope you enjoy the International Zodiac Job System experience. See ya then!"

    1. It's been a while, but I believe level 10 should be more than enough to start the missions. Even that may be over kill.

    2. I'd stick with the shops at first (if you can find them. I know, windurst is a pain in the ass to navigate) but later on it's easier to buy equipment from the Auction House, and if you're willing to invest the money, it can be an even better thing to craft your weapons and armor yourself.

    3. You mean to sarutabaruta? Yes, that's windurst low level area designed for for new players, and lowbies. Although don't wander too far. If you mean outside of that starting area. It's possible, hell you could even run to jeuno at level 1, but it's not practical. You should wait at least until level 10 to venture away from teh starting areas.

    4. You buy spells from shops, or the AH.

    5. Yes. You should already have a map of Windurst and some of the areas surrounding it. but there are also map vendors in each city that sell maps to the areas beyond that.

    How much are the maps?

if I can recall correctly they are usually 600 gil for the city and immediate surrounding areas (again, you should already have a windurst map, so you odn't have to worry about that) and 3k for all the other maps

To check if you will be able to survive in an area, highlight a monster in that area and select it and a menu should apear, clcik on check and the text at the bottom of your screen should read one of the phrases below.

Too weak to be worthwhile - this means the creature will be very weak and you will gain no EXP from it.

Easy prey - This means you should be able to tackle and defeat the monster quite easily, it's best to pick off this monsters while soloing.

Even match - This means you and the creature are the same level you never know if you'll beat it, it's really down to your skills, job etc. The EXP may be worth the battle.

Tough - This means the creature will most probably beat you not worth soloing.

Very tough - Don't attempt this unless you're with a party.

Incredibly tough - This could mean the monster has a good thirty levels on you maybe less maybe more, you can't tell. Either way this is a bad idea even in a party.

Impossible to gauge - Unknown, of course you can look on the internet for levels of these monsters. Monsters that have this are called NMs (Notorious monsters) they usually drop rare and valuable goods.

That is to the best of my knowledge all of the different phrases that can appear, maybe there are others, I don't know I only played till level 21.

There's also "decent challenge" which is between easy pray, and even match. Although the higher up you go in evel, the harder the enemies get, so at some point EPs could smack you around just as easily as VTs do at level 1.

Also, I don't totally agree scott about ITs, true it IS a bad idea to take on ITs even in a party (especially since you don't know exactly how much higher they are in level than you) most most parties consistenly take out ITs anyway. As long as you're smart about it you should be okay. Though it is generally better to take on VTs than ITs, because though VTs give less EXP, you can kill them much faster, making your exp per hour higher than it would be killing ITs.

The best way to learn the game is to play it, honestly. Join a linkshell. It's like a froup of people who can all talk to each other at any time. There will always be higher level people than you who can answer your questions. The game can be overwhelming at first, but it is also very fun. One thing I disagree with is waiting to buy at the AH. (Auction House) Lately prices have jumped because of the new character classes, but usually it's cheaper then the stores and far more equipment is available.

    This was a joke right? In the 2+ years I've been playing I've never seend the beginning sets like the Robe, Bronze and later Leather sets cheaper on AH than in shops. Shops are definitely the way to go. Even though I'm currently of Windy allegiance I was originally Sandy and therefore have no clue where the shops are in Windy ; ;

I dont remember where the shops were in Windhurst... as I started my Monk in Bastok.

and I now live in San.

heres a tip for being a Monk

if you have trouble getting invites, invite people yourself, and keep yourself motivated for whats quite a lonely journey till the high levels .

What is it you don't totally agree about? You basically just gave a more thorough explaination of what I said.

    1) I think I was level 7 or 8 when I did my first mission. I think by level 10 you should be ready to take on the first mission at the very least. Don't confuse missions for quests though. Quests you can do right from the get go. In fact, the moment you start the game you're given a quest to give an adventurer coupon to one of the NPCs in town. I recommend doing quests whenever you have time because you'll appreciate having done it gradually over a period of time rather than having to do a bunch of repetitive quests later on in order to build fame.

    2) You can purchase weapons and armor from both NPC shops as well as from the AH. I'd say that in the beginning you can get a lot of the stuff you need from NPCs and it'll be a lot cheaper if you do. Of course some stuff you won't be able to buy in the shops and you'll have to get them from the AH, but I recommend that you *always* check with an NPC before bidding on something at the AH. The shops in Windurst are located in Port Windurst and Wind Walls I believe. Not entirely sure on this though.

    3) Depends what level you are. By level 10 your should be fine wandering around the areas immediately outside Windurst. When you move into the next zone which are the Canyons, I would be careful until you get to lvl 15 or so. The biggest challenge for you will be to get the Mhaura and the ship to take you to Selbina when you hit 10 in order to go party in the dunes. I had to have someone escort me after I died trying to get there on my own. If you can't find someone to escort you, you either have to be very careful to avoid aggro, or you need to bring sneak oils with you.

    4) He can learn spells by buying them from NPC stores or from the AH. Same as you do for other weapons. He should already have had the scroll of Stone in his inventory when he started. In order to learn the spell, all he needs to do is select and use that item in the inventory list.

    5) Yes, you can buy maps from an NPC in Wind Woods I believe. Maps are fairly cheap, a couple hundred gil. A bit more for the maps that are further away from the starting city.

I recommend that you bookmark a site like Allakhazam because there's just *so* much information about FFXI that sometimes sites like Alla are a god send since you can look up items, quest, armor, whatever on the main site and get lots of job info in the forums.

Isn't Allakazham now owned by IGE? A lot of people are now taking down their guides and moving elsewhere. =(

There are still a lot of other sites though, like mysterytour, somepage and killingifrit.

There's no best site but there are a lot of good sites... I think I'll make a post outlining some of them for all to use.

Am I given another quest after I give the adventurer's coupon?
