The easiest way that I've found to perform a short-hop is to hold the thumb on either X or Y, whichever you prefere, and then quickly let it "slip off". A bit hard to explain but... yeah, it works really good.

Another thing I want in SSBB, though, is better wave dashes for slow characters. Ganon with a wave dash like Marth's= Me happy.
