They are nicknames; offical titles, simply because they are never used in-game for anything else than illustrative reasons (except for Xemnas'). Only three names actually clearly refer to their weapons; five if by a stretch. Roxas, Xaldin, and Xigbar are definites, and with some creative interpretation, Marluxia and Demyx included.
Certain members of the OXIII also exert control over breeds of Nobodies, as evidenced by the Jiminy's Journal. Notice Xemnas' element is Nothing, with a capital EN. The members killed in CoM don't have a Nobody group to control (except Marluxia), but most DO have an element used in combat. If they did, then the Nobodies were probably assimilated into the ranks of the existing Nobodies who still had a Leader who is alive (well, alive as alive can be by the definition of a Nobody).

Xigbar - Space; Snipers, doublesided-rifle that merge to become a sniper rifle without crosshairs (American version only, in the Japanese, it becomes a Lee Enfield .303)
Xaldin - Wind (Air); Dragoons, six spears (two held in the right hand, one in left)
Vexen - Ice; unknown, a large shield with icicle spikes
Lexaeus - Earth; unknown, large tomahawk axe
Zexion - unknown; unknown, unknown
Saix - Moon; Berserkers, a large claymore with a rounded end
Axel - Fire; Assassins, dual chakram
Demyx - Water; Dancers, sitar (guitar with multiple sharp edges)
Luxord - Time; Gamblers, 52 deck of cards and some dice (Gambit wannabe; what, no Quarterstaff? Disgusting, you can't even blow stuff up either! What's the point of you?)
Marluxia - Flower (Nature); unnamed, a large pink scythe
Larxene - Thunder; unknown, duel claws (Wolverine, anyone? No Auto-Regen)
Roxas - Light; Samurai, Oblivion/Oathkeeper
