They're treasures scattered around in the world, or Gaia whatever. Anyway, the first few chocographs include crap, but the treasures gets a whole lot better later on. Definitely worth your time.
ah right thanks, another question... as soon as i unlocked the lagoon i left the forest to go and find that... and now ive found all the peices there (the moogle said choco couldnt find any more) is there any left in the forest or am i supposed to go anywhere else?

There is some left in the forest. Go back after you cleared out the graphs in the lagoon

Chocograph piece give you clues about Chocobo Air Garden. It tell you where the shadow that lead you to the Chocobo Air Garden (you need Dead Peppers).
You need to go to these place:
Chocobo Forest (First time) (Yellow Chocobo)
Chocobo Lagoon (First time) (Light-Blue Chocobo)
Chocobo Forest (Second time) (Red Chocobo)
Chocobo Lagoon (Second time) (Dark-Blue Chocobo)
Chocobo Air Garden (First time) (Gold Chocobo)
