    Default Buildings and Architecture

So Dan Cruickshank has basically caused me to fall in love with architecture, so much so that I'd be tempted to take that at college if I hadn't already sorted everything else out, and if I could draw. (Don't say you don't need to be able to draw. You need far better art skills than I've got, trust me.)

But, that doesn't prohibit discussion on the matter! So, do you like architecture? What styles do you like? And what buildings do you like?

I think my favourite building in the world is the Chysler Building. It's just so well put together, and while there is form not suited to its function, it's both restrained and, more importantly, it works incredibly well. In my eyes it's one of the best examples of Art Deco anywhere. And that would be one of my favorite styles. I would say Modernist is my fave style, but that has more potential to go wong than any other style I can think of, and often has, so I don't think I can put it up there. Still, when they get a Modernism building right, they make something special.

Of course, that's not to discount the older styles of architecture. Two particularly stand out; Gothic and Classicism. Gothic is just plain cool and wonderful to look at. In a lot of cases what looks like spectacular and even ostentatious ornamental is actually a part of the building itself, as necessary as walls. Classical architecture is pretty fundamental even today, having influenced two thousand years of Western architecture. My favorite example of that would almost certainly have to be The Pantheon, which wins out over others due to the absolutely magnificent construction of the domed roof.

Oh, I love the Chrysler Tower! I have a picture of it somewhere from when I last went to the city with my parents. It's one of the nicest buildings in NYC.

My favourite style is Gothic. When I went to Venice in Italy, everything was done in a style like that, it was gorgeous.

I have a three-meg Powerpoint slide show featuring some very interesting buildings, but I can't upload it here. : (

We don't have anything like that here. I think we have this staircase that goes around a spike but its in the back streets and its already getting damaged.

Our Townhall is quite nice though

    I can't find a better image.

    1. I'd pay a lot to explore this mansion.

    2. The local insane asylum. Picture taken before it was abandoned. Now punks and rascals break in for fun and spray the walls with tags.

    3. I also like the Notre Damme

Asian style! the land of beautiful clothing, arts, and architecture. Asia is majestic. in Teochew, Cambodia is pronounced "Khim Tat"; the English translation means "golden roof". and it certainly isn't a lie:

the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

But seriously, rather than the finished product, I used to want to be an architect for the plans. I loved doing that sort of thing... the blueprints of a house or building always interested me a lot. I was going to be an architect up to the age of 16, when I no longer took Graphics & Design (despite doing incredibly well in my exams for it the previous three years) as I didn't like having to follow a set process that my school wanted me to do. From that point on I wanted to work in the computer industry.

Anyway, as for nice looking buildings, I like the Auckland Skytower and have always loved medieval castles, too. The ruins of them in particular, but that's probably not really what you'd call architecture. These and these are good examples of that sort of stuff I'm into, though. Not going around inside them, but just the outside, the power and pride they hold.

Have you ever looked through the Architecture magazine? My dad used to have a suscription to that, and there's some pretty awesome houses and stuff in there.

I'd like to design a house to build someday.

I've always been interested in the mathematics involved in ancient architecture (The Parthenon, The Pyramids, Stonehenge, etc.). It's interesting to see how resourceful the ancients were when it came to math and architecture.

I think there's so much clean precision, symmetry and beauty in architecture. Which is why architectural photography is one of my favorite genres of photography. I did my final project for one of my photography classes on the buildings and skyscrapers of Los Angeles. Some of my favorites:

    <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/hannahgoesrawr/Photography/Slate.png"></a> <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/hannahgoesrawr/Photography/Downtown___Two.jpg"></a> <a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/hannahgoesrawr/Photography/Downtown___One.jpg"></a>

I would looove to go around the world and do nothing but shoot architecture for awhile.
