All you can rename is the Trainer Dressphere's pets, Yuna's dog, Rikku's monkey, and Paine's bird. I called Yuna's dog Crap because it will then have an attack called Holy Crap!

Don't blame yourself, it's pretty natural I've never bothered changing pets name, but it looks like this Dark Messenger's idea is a good one for Sh*t! too

I personally like YuRiPa in the Japanese version. IMO better than YRP. Sounds more like a Charlie's Angels wannabe. :mog:

Anyway, you can rename the pets by talking to Barkeep in Chapter 5.
