It's not all about winning competitions, mate - give it time and do it for the fun of it. If you're still having fun by next time you might just win - but if you're concentrating more on winning than on just doing it for the enjoyment of doing it you might lose a few fans, justified or not.
People often complain that oldbies tend to win a lot, I think one of the reasons is that a lot of them don't come across as trying too hard because they've got used to the fact that it isn't the be-all and end-all of the world.
