That, my friend, is an understatement. He is INFINATELY better in the GBA version.

Do you think we're just lying to you? Gilbert is a prime player in the Advance version. I won't disagree that he's absolutely abysmal in the original, but in the GBA version, he is a very useful character to have. His attacks cause great damage, and are great even in the back row. He can also massacre undead enemies. His Chant acts as a Mighty Guard-like skill, which is useful for boss fights, which was mentioned before.

And he has a pretty theme.

So, yes, he's a very great character.

His only real drawback in the GBA version is his pitiful HP.

Golden Apples can easily take care of that though.

Well, I put him in the back row, so taking damage isn't much of an issue for him, at least for me.

I always liked Edward. Even only for the early parts of the game. He had some unigue skills, and his status effects added to his harp attacks were pretty nifty as well. I only wish his Heal wasn't as useless later on. But over all I always liked his character. I love him even more now that he has Chant and I've learned how fast he can fill his ATB bar. ^^b

I dislike Edward combat wise. Hes pretty weak (attack power) and i never found too m uch use of his other skills.

as a charachter though, he is pretty awesome, kickin it to a dark elf and being a spoony bard!!!!!

In FFIV Advanced with Apollo's harp he's very strong against dark enemies, and especially undead. When I busted his first 9999 I was freaking out. He was the last character I excepted to see that from. XD

Although chant is a powerful move, too bad you only get it after his trial so it's so late into the game when you get to use it. T_T

I've played FF2 on the SNES, FF4 on the PS1, and FF4A on the GBA, and I've never found Edward to be useful. He is good at disappearing during the sequence when you arrive at Fabul Castle, and because it's all scene where you don't control outside of the battles, you can't heal in between fights, rendering him totally useless from the moment he gets injured. If he gets killed, you can bring him back to life, but he'll hide immediately, and be hidden for the remainder of the sequence.

To me, Edward was just a pain. He didn't bring any real help to the table, and it was tough at first to keep him alive while trying to get him to level up a bit. His character was quite helpful against the Dark Elf, but that's a story related incident that will happen regardless of his value in a battle that you're fighting.

For physical damage, he sucks compared to Cecil, Kain or Edge. And he has no Black, White or Summon magic to compensate. His singing would be more valuble if you could choose which song he sings.

In FF4A, I used Edward enough to get his weapon from Mt. Ordeals, and then never again.

But that's just how I view Edward as a playable character. As a story character, he's super important and quite unique. He brings the an angle to the story and fills in the parts quite well. He is a well-developed character with a lot of personality and he interacts with the other story characters quite well, serving also to bring out another side of many other characters.

I've always liked Edward's personality, and I find that melody he plays on the harp very pretty.

Am I the only one bothered by the six month necroposting? I'm as much of a fan of Ed as the next man (more so than most), but can't we make a new thread?
