I say version instead of installment. I have played the PS1 and PS2 installments then. Happy?

I only played one of them, SO3. It was too long for me, and I got really frustrated at it. But thats just personally me. If your really into those puzzles that don't really go anywhere, then go ahead!!!

    Yes :D.
And well Zeromus. In the other two you actually had a proper reason for being on an underdeveloped planet. In SO3 you're just kinda stuck there cause you can't help it :p.

Yeah, I guess that's true...still, it shouldn't be that surprising to spend time on one in a Star Ocean game. (I guess we all can't play 'em all.)

*This is spoilered, and may ruin the entire series. You've been warned.*

(SPOILER)SO1- You live on it! And...go back in time.

SO2- You...teleport there. For no clear reason. Rena lives on it in the first place.

    SOBS- They all meet there.

    SO3- Crash land. Twice! xD

That's not to say they didn't all had funky plot-twists either.

SO1- Oh, you cured the disease. Now we need to go fight an evil superhuman on the planet Fargett. Tough luck!

SO2- Holy crap, your world got destroyed. And you have to fight ten super-powerful cyborgs. It's like ten Jies, with religious allusions! xD

SO3- It turns out the whole universe is really a simulation. And it's gotten 'too real', so it must be destroyed. As if superhuman cyborgs with religious allusions weren't enough, now you have to fight God. Go figure.

No because I never played the SNES one and I enjoyed the PS1 game as you had a choice of characters. I didnt like being stuck on the medievil planet for ages in SOS3 because it did get boring.

You had a choice of characters in SO3 too, kinda :p. Nel is optional, and so is Roger. Both can be aquired on Elicoor.

I was talking about being on an underdeveloped planet. It isn't a surprise. Claude being transported to Expel isn't 'expected' either, just like Fate crashing on Vanguard/Elicoor. Furthermore, you do have a choice in characters on SO3, there are four optional characters. At least they don't all just ask you if they can join and you have one chance to recruit them, and not all of them are practically useless. (Noel, Ernest, etc.) At the least, not so far outclassed that they might as well be useless.

I meant choice of character as in choice of lead character, not ones that can join your party later.

Most JRPGs don't have that option though, including SO1 (I'm pretty sure), so that's more of a bonus than a norm.
Actually, I see a pattern here. SO1: You start with an UDP character. SO2: You can choose between an UDP and DP character. SO3: You start with a DP character.

BTW: Did anyone ever figure out the connection to that first planet that transported Klaude to Expel in SO2?

I started with Star Ocean: The Second Story.
I totally LOVED the atmosphere in Arlia!

I'd go with the Second Story. I played the original for the NES and thought it was boring. TTEOT was decent, but I just liked SS better.
