And if you say you have to develop the other characters through sidequests well then that brings up one very big point.

If you have to develop the characters through sidequests than there must not be much development there (those are the types of things you do for Yuffie or Vincent who are two completely optional characters . Not for characters like Zell or Quistis who were there from the very beginning of the game practically.

Most people if they do not enjoy the characters they will not enjoy the game. And in order to enjoy them you need to learn things about them. So you shouldn't make getting to know the main characters an optional part of the game.

That is why ff8 is overall one of the least liked games in the final fantasy series. Because there just wasn't a whole lot to many of the characters.
i find that going through side quests to learn and develop the characters a good point in the game. it is a unique feature to this game and if you dont want to develop ur characters at least you wont have sit through hours of pointless fmvs if you have already played through the game.

Agrred.. I get so bored with character development when you dislike the characters. It's so much better to see the development by doing sidequests

To each his own. But that is a big reason why alot of people didn't care for alot of the ff8 characters. And why ff8 will never be viewed in the same regard as ff7 is.

That works, except that FFVIII /did/ present much more information than just the bits about the orphanage at the Trabia scene; each of the main characters /was/ given spotlight, both on their roles in the Garden and on what happened with them after the orphanage. Sure, not all of the details are given, just as not all of the details were given in FF7, but it's an exaggeration to say that FF8 had no character development, unless I was hallucinating all of the clear differences in the characters. That, and the ridiculousness of the memory loss plot point is completely based in opinion.

The trick to most of this, though, is opinion--and it bothers me a bit to see people deliberately ignore a game's good point to make their favorite game look better, when it's certainly not perfect, either. FF8 does have a lot of fans, and did very well--but it's one of those games that one usually either loves or hates.

Can you list some of the backstories of characters like Zell, Quistis, and Irvine..... excetra.....
What did they tell about these characters through the sidequests.

Not trying to say anything bad about the game by any responses somebody may give. I just never caught any of those backstories the time I played the game and I don't really want to go back and replay the game in order to find them out.

Through sidequests? We mostly just got personality elements out of most of them, with a couple of background things thrown in. In the game, though, they threaded most of their history--Quistis being from the orphanage, for instance, but also having had an adoptive home, coming to Garden, essentially being a prodigy, studying at Galbadia, etc. Reading between the lines can expand this even more. Selphie's friends are an important background bit because they tie into her obsession with the Garden festival; Zell is the easiest on that mark, because of his family ties in Balamb, and so forth.

The background information is there, it's just presented differently than in FF7--and, I admit, one of the things I liked about FF8 over FF7 is that it had a much more coherent setting, as far as I saw.

All of those characters had their backstory told within the game. The all grew up in the same orphanage, joined SeeD and forgot about it.

Really, it wasn't so much that no backstory was given that made the characters boring; it was the fact that most of them virtually had the SAME backstory.

Honestly I thought the first disc of ff8 was really good. I liked the military setting that they created as the basis for the game. And I thought the whole idea about them sending these guys out to assassinate somebody was pretty interesting.

But then the plot development really seemed to slow down. Instead of them advancing upon this military and war setting that they started out with they instead turned it into some love story full of characters they were making it difficult to get to know.

One thing that I do find a little odd is that a game which is meant to be a character drama for the most part had quite an awkward way of developing those characters. You would think that if any game needed a solid and defined character developing system it would be ff8 (a game which pretty much was supposed to revolve around how the characters felt towards eachother.)

Woo! My first post on the FFVIII forum!

FFVIII is my second favourite after FFX, and surpasses FFVII in ever area in my opinion. I just find the chracters so much more likeable, diverse, and realistic than any other Final Fantasy title (other than FFX)

Everyone I talk to at college hates FFVIII though, they say it has no story what-so-ever.

I think it's lack of relative popularity compared to VII is because it's the most realistic of the FF titles. Many people don't like that.

Yep, All is True. People dont accept the whole concept of ff8, but ff8 fans love it heaps! (ME)
