Cloud. Spikey-headed-originally-overconfident-but-later-underconfident-ex-SOLDIER-(but-not-really)with-mysterious-hole-filled-past-and-schizophrenia-not-to-mention-he's-practically-trippin-for-a-good-portion-of-the-game.
Plus he's got a big sword. And he's a hit with the lady-types. What more could you want?
By the by, characters as minor as Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie are in here but there's no Hojo? I know everyone hates him but I'd at least consider him an important character worthy of being an option.
Sephiroth was so cool. Every time i saw him in the game he had a godly pressence. It sent shivers down my spine I was like hes goign to kick my ass.

2. Cid, engineer, what i want to be, and is tough.
3. Tifa for her obvious talent.
Cloud wins my vote. Not for superficial reasons, but for the way he confronted and overcame the nasty secrets from his past - the strength that empowered him to keep going in the face of crippling self-doubts, when it looked like the world might truly be done for. He's no fearless immortal, rather a person with very human weaknesses and flaws who nonetheless does what has to be done in order to protect the lives of others. Rising to challenges, rather than simply being an unstoppable force like other heroes.
at the end my main characters were barret red XIII and cloud all just over lvl 80 with all summons, man they kicked sepheroths ass
