In my opinion, in order to have a good party (in most cases), a fighter is needed. They are indeed a great class. Sure, it's expensive to keep them fitted with the best equipment, but seeing as fighting monsters to build up your gil also builds up your levels, this is actually a good thing in the end even though it does take time and can be a bit tedious.
