Can anyone tell me which media player you need to play .rar files , as i downloaded a file that was that format and it wont play on Windows Media Player

That's an archived file. Download the program from the link above and unrar (same as unzip) the file. The file inside will be the media file.

I prefer 7-zip to Winrar/Winzip, since it's also open-source

Plus it handles non-ascii filenames inside .rar files better, and works better on incomplete .rar files than Winrar itself does
