I totaly agree. Dislike U2 or not, there the ones making the money, and only when your in a multi-million deal can you really comment on whats being asked here. I like U2, i like there music, and i really dont agree with them being called 'sell-outs', and too the idiot who said that Bono is only using the whole 'charity' issue as a way to gain more of a celebrity status, that is bogus, and down right wrong. The guy might be one of the only people in the world who's in a position to actually make a real differance in the 3rd world countries. If you don't have any more important ideas than saving mass human life than give the guy a break.Originally Posted by Miriel

After Dave N~ left the band RHCP have gone back to crappy under the bridge type crap (except now its about California ... or is it Kalifornia(?)) ... one of those crappy songs plays ever 10 secs. on the radio and every time you hear it ... it swallows a peice of your soul ! there is no doubt RHCP are sell outs ... U2 sold out before the Apple thing ... and who honestly believes U2 ... or RHCP for that matter writes all 'Their' (a relative term) material.
So many ppl use ghost writers (ppl who do the work but don't receive credit for it) these days ... so they can look like its all original crap rather than someone elses crap their singin'.
And i guess i am a moron cause my group writes all original material (music and lyrics) and i have given away so many cd's cause for me and my group its all about the music !
We just want ppl to hear our music !

Chuck Noblet: Can anyone tell me the tragic irony of the Trojan War? Tina? Tina: Um, that horses are friendly creatures yet a hollow, wooden one was used to destroy Troy? Chuck Noblet: Wrong and no. Anyone else? Chip? Chip: That the mighty warrior Achilles was killed by a small cut to his ankle. Chuck Noblet: Chip is wronger. OK, here it is. The tragic irony of the Trojan War is that though it was fought over Helen, who was young and beautiful, by the time they rescued her ten years later, she was old and ugly. Tina: But wasn't recovering the king's wife reward enough for the Greeks? Chuck Noblet: Tina, an ugly woman is never a reward.

[QUOTE=Spaceman Spiff]I own my own record label ... i give away music as a promo (which i have had one person in the lot say it was good just not their cup of tea, everyone else loved it) ... i wouldn't sign a contract cause i don't want to be told how to write and record ... the 'it must not be good' comment is probly just cause i said your fav band sux ... u can listen to my music on another thread on this forum and tell me how bad i suck (go ahead ... i'll be right here, trying to stop laughing so hard, so i can answer the phone). and just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist .... U2 are rock legends and they can do whatever they want, including make warmed-over crap albums like their latest, put their name on an iPod, and whatever else. RHCP are if anything jealous that they haven't reached the heights U2 have.
I find it pretty sad when people equate success to selling out. Wow, someone signs a recording contract, and they're sellouts. That's bull.
So what if they sold out? "It's all about the music" is often the thinking of those who don't wish to make a living out of their passion/People who can't make a living out of their passion because they are crap.
I can see a problem when we have "Jenny From The Block" style posturing in bands, but while we don't have that: Is it a problem? It's not like Bono is saying he's poor like Lars Ulrich. Complaining about it won't change the fact the money makes the world go around. I'd sign that recording contract in a second, and so would many of us.
I think we should just chill out and relax about this sort of thing. "Sell Outs"? My Arse.
"I think you'd make any (nice) woman happy... & I think you really deserve for someone to make you happy too for a change"
Exactly. It can still be about the music, even if you're getting paid for it.Originally Posted by roto13-ness

Again, you can have passion for doing something as still make money off it. Artists in any field do it. Making money doesn't make the quality of what you're doing any less unless you personally degrade it. If, for some reason, the presence of money makes you write ty music, then by all means, don't make any. But I really see no reason why it's a bad thing to make a living out of what you are good at.
Attaching your music to products and such, THAT is selling out. But making music and getting money for it? Nah.

Why is signing a recording contract immoral?Originally Posted by Fuego

I perform music, too, though I'm just a beginner at really learning how to perform, and the most important thing to me is not to make money, but to communicate with people. If I ever got a chance to sign a recording contract, I sure as hell would do it. It would give me a much larger opportunity to communicate. I honestly don't know much about U2, but from what I do know about them and based on Bono's charity work, they are pretty sincere in their efforts.
