No, they really are not that good. They are average players within the power metal realm, and I know damned sure could not stand up against alot of death metal and prog. metal guitarists.

Now. For my guitar solo that I love so much:

Pain of Salvation - King Of Loss

I disagree with you.
Li is not only one of the fastest shredders, he can play that speed modally, which is a pretty rare talent. And note that being one of the fastest doesn't mean "faster than Malmsteen". I will concede that Alexei is not the best player, but his composition is brilliant. And his studio recordings are fantastic, it's only his live stuff you notice being a bit ragged.

Death metal is atonal. Meaning they often play without key signature. Which is loosely translated as "pick as many strings as you can in the next thirty seconds, and I don't care which ones". I think death metal sounds awful.
Prog metal, on the other hand, I think is great. They have some fantastic guitarists. For the record I love Pain of Salvation, and the solo in King of Loss.

Well. First, Herman Li is by no means a bad guitarist. He is a talented guitarist, he just can't write good music for . Alexi, however, is a good player, who can write good music, as shown on the first three albums, but chooses to write crap that will get more and more fans. For the record, I hate Malmsteen's emotionless playing with a passion.

Also. Death metal, is RARELY atonal. I can think of maybe, two bands than use atonality in their music, and neither of them are death metal actually. Meshuggah, and if I read the interview properly, due to the composition technique that Anderson uses in Sculptured, they make use of atonality. Alot of death metal relys on melody, and I'm not refering to the derivitive Gothenburg style that bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity play, because that is much more power metal than it is death metal. I mean, Lykathea Aflame, Wayd, Crypt Of Kerberos ... infact, death metal as a whole is a tonal genre. It is one of the most wrongfully hated styles of metal, probably because of the vocals mostly, but anyways ... please, check out these albums: Gorod - Neurotripsicks and Wayd - Decadance, because it is one of the most melodic and technical death metal albums, sure to impress you in some way, that I know of. Your definition of atonal is off too, it really means lacking a tonal center. You're idea of death metal being just guys with guitars playing random notes is quite wrong, inaccurate, and obviously bred from ignorance of the genre. It takes much more talent to play something from, say Necrophagist, Spawn of Possession, or Wayd than it does to play something from bands like Children of Bodom and Dragonforce, because while their music does show that they can play guitar competently, their music does not encompass the time changes, and other technical maneuvers that a good amount of death metal involves.

Anyways, please do yourself a favor and check out the Gorod and Wayd albums, it will, if anything, change your idea as to what death metal is.

As for you liking Pain of Salvation, good job ^_^ my favorite band ever

No matter how much you and Sigmund Freud want it to be, 'mother' is not a curse word.
