You can't rename any cards. You can play anybody by pressing square.

You can only choose the names for Squall, Rinoa and Angelo (her dog).

You can't name a majority of the characters. Just Squall, Rinoa, her dog, and the GFs.

I remember that you can't name Quistis, Irvine, or Zell.
