Default Wing Commander: Privateer. Made for a 386, but playable on a pentium 4?

When trying to play this great DOS based game I finally managed to install it after months of trying but now it won't load. When I try it says something about being in safe mode and that I need to make sure my EMS is set to RAM and not NOEMS. I have no idea what NOEMS are, but when going into the properties of the DOS shortcut and checking out the EMS it's set to auto and configured to the same settings as everything else in the advanced tab. Any idea what it's talking about?
