I don't think they are trying to be racist I just think, because they come from Japan (which is predominately filled with Japanese) they precieve others that aren't Japanese as an ignorant sterotype ( A. K. A. Barret).
In another forum there was a similar debate and the conclusion was that for better or worse nearly every FF7 character (in your party) is a stereotype of a group of people as viewed by the Japanese game developers... Let me break it down for you:
Barrett: The obvious ebonics-speaking Mr.T generic black guy. The Black Panthers should be pissed!
Cid: A loud-mouthed, stubborn, arrogant American. The US Army should be pissed!
Aeris(or Aerith for you purist nerds): An overly weak frail female. Feminists should be pissed!
Tifa: A woman wearing an F-cup bra. Porn stars should be pissed!
Red XIII: The talking animal full of wisdom. Simba and the rest of the cast of The Lion King should be pissed!
Yuffie: Re-enforces the stereotype that all ninjas are thieves. Shinobi should be pissed!
Vincent: The misunderstood dark gothy character. Trent Reznor should be pissed!
Cait Sith: I don't even know where to start this one. Magical oversized moogles being ridden by remote controlled cats should be pissed!
Cloud: Blonde hair, blue eyes, and comes from an army of soldiers exactly like him... It reminds me of a movie I saw a long time ago, but I had trouble keeping up with it because THE NARATION WAS IN GERMAN!!!

When has Square ever said anything bad about black, asian or white people ? Square arent being racist, they're being stereotypes.
Its an ignorance. Like many whites who aren't around other races in America Square in Japan don't see many non-Asian people so their perception would be shaped by the media. With the case of Barret. Black people are what they see on T.V. so thats how they make the character. A friend of mine who went to Japan told me your're looked at as exotic because in all truth most foreigners probaly think of white people when they see Americans. Look at Dragonball. Adjudant Black was the leader of the Red Ribbon Army (after he shot General Red) and he was really dark with big lips minstrel style. Mr. PoPo too.

Its only starting up, which means its not world class- but hey whats the harm in having a look. (or registering!) The only way its gonna get better is if more people join up.

Why is it racist if Barret acts like a black person from the ghetto? Why is that being racist? I do not understand this. Maybe his character WAS meant to be a black guy with a low level of education and all that crap that was said.
Racism and stereotyping are two different things. And to be honest, the majority of black people living in slum areas speak like this. How do I know? I live in Washington Heights in Manhattan. Are all black people like this? No. What about Rude? He was not like that at all. That is not a factor though because ignorance must be very common in here.
