The characters of FFVII have super human attributes, while the characters of FFVIII are very much just your average human. Cloud and Sephiroth are far stronger than any character from FFVIII, thus Squal would lose to Sephiroth.

judging it by damage isnt always fair espicially if their from different games. if you put it that way by your thinking rinoa could beat sephiroth kuja and sin all at once (which no FF hero could do.) just imagine if they were real people and it was film or something. in VS things its often good to think aside HP and levels and damage in games and just think if it was a normal fight like real life with no HP and no levels and stuff like that. i think sephiroth would win. simply because of amazing fighting skills (E.G. the ones shwon in AC.) squall is good but i just dont think he has what it take to beat sephiroth. and as said above. the characters in FF8 are more like normal humans. the video of the fight against seifer isnt anything fancy and although the characters get stronger throughout the course of the game i still dont think squall is strong enough.

In the FMVs the characters of FFVII are more like normal humans too. But in the movie they are super-humans. Why? Because of they Limit Breaks. You have to see what they can do in they Limit Breaks to say what they can do in "real life". If Square make a movie of FFVIII, the characters will be super-human too.
