Partly because of constant and escalating tensions in the middle east, partly because of the business in that Alaskan pipeline, and partly because oil supplies are beginning to dwindle, and this is being recognized.
Invest in fuel cells and nano-scale solar cells. You will make more money than you can calculate.

It's pretty annoying, yeah, and I don't think it's an option for everyone to walk - I live way out in the country, and the winters get pretty bitterly cold, so it'd be a major pain to walk around three miles starting probably at 6AM during winter.
I'm lucky that my parents do pay for my gas, and because I'm grateful, I try to be conservative. Ever since prices started going up major (~2.70 and up) I've just stopped going places innecessantly. During school I'm planning on carpooling with friends and mostly just using my car for going to and coming home from school. I'm hoping that something will get figured out as an alternative, but everyone's been hoping that since prices were SKYROCKETING OMFG back in '99, and we're still ways off.
So basically you gotta learn to live with it and not be so wasteful of gas.

I know gas prices are on the rise, really sucks because I just got a car recently!
I can't walk anywhere anyway I live out in the country and I'm not walking to the city and then all the way across it. It would take me all day to get there.. or I'd get run over by a car....
