If you have played disc 3 recently, he dosen't slowly realize how much he cared for Rinoa. From the very beginning of disc 3 till the very end, all his thoughts and actions were directed towards saving Rinoa and to reunite with her.
At the very start of disc 3, Squall wakes up in his dormitory and instantly Rinoa was the only thing on his mind. He went to the infirmary to check on Rinoa, then he went to Edea's house and all he could think about was Rinoa, his mind was too occupied with thoughts about Rinoa to even listen to Edea's explanation. He then decided to find Ellone in order to save Rinoa. He wanted to save her so much that he carried her across the railways connecting Fishermans Horizon and Esthar, and from there accompanied her into space to make sure she was safe. After Ultimecia possessed Rinoa again and freed Adel from her seal, Rinoa was lost in space and Squall risked his life in order to rescue her. He even offered to be taken back to the past and change things through Rinoa. Due to Rinoa being a sorceress her powers had to be sealed. But Squall couldn't have that, he went back to the Sorceress Memorial and freed Rinoa, even though he knew it was the wrong thing to do and that it was Rinoa's decision. He even said that should Rinoa become the world's enemy, he'll be her knight.
Squall is very different from the beginning of disc 3, compared to his End of Disc 2 self. If Squall was anything like what he's like in disc 3 during the time when Rinoa was falling off Balamb Garden, he wouldn't have cared about all that crap requiring 'immediate attention', he wouldn't rely on anyone else to go save her, and just went to save Rinoa himself. Because that's excactly what he would've done in disc 3.
