Thread: Persian/Zorastrian cultures and FF?

  1. #1

    Default Persian/Zorastrian cultures and FF?

Has there ever been a middle-eastern culture in a FF game? Well other than any possible infulences in FFXII.

I'm curious because I'm writing up an character based on the musical score for General Beatrix ('Sword of Confusion'/'of Doubt'); and I want to have a plot thread using a persian character, but based off FF.

So far I have little, but If I get a complete Bio and background of the exodus from Praxis (the world where the persians came from) I'll post both.

PSS: Cam a mod please change this to 'Persian/Zorastrian cultures and FF?''

Multiple mythical creatures from from Middle-Eastern cultures.

I couldn't tell you which ones specifically, but someone will get around to it.

If you refer to characters and specific towns, then I don't believe any of them are majorly influenced.

I thought there were some Mid-East references (albeit not really cultural) in FFX, especially where the Al Bhed were concerned. Their Home was in the middle of a sandy desert area (the stereotypical Arabian setting ), and (according to a teacher) the word "al" is used in the beginning of a lot of arabic phrases. But maybe I'm reading into things too much .

Apparently a lot of the names of fiends and some characters have Persian origin or something in FFX/X-2.

Azi Dahaka,Angra Mainyu are bosses in FFX-2 and in Zoroastrian religion, are important characters.Angra Mainyu is the god of darkness and evil, while Azi Dahaka is a dragon.

In FFX-2,Aka Manah,Aeshma,Daeva,Jahi,Tawrich and Zarich, are all named after Persian demons.Taromaiti, also from X-2,is named after Angra mainyu's daughter.Zurvan(which is ALSO from X-2)is named after the father of Angra Mainyu and Ahura Mazda, the chief Zoroastrian god of light and good.

Ahriman,a common FF enemy,is another name for Angra Mainyu.

Thamasa,a town in FFVI,means "to one in the mode of darkness" in Sanskrit.

You guys remember that in FF??(4 I think),that Ultima weapon was misnamed "Atma" Weapon?Well in Sanskrit,Atman means soul.Coincedence?

Yeah, you better love me after doing this research for you.

Btw,www.ffcompendium.com is where I got my info.

I am not sure about persian but there were a lot of arabic refrences in FF

    -Ifrit means demon in arabic
-"Al Bhed" al means the and bhed(or bayt) means home
-Zidane is an arabic name but it mostly based on Zidane the soccer player who also arabian (he is originaly from Algeria)
    -Faris means Knight/horsman in arabic
-Zanarkand is probably based on Samarkand a city in Iraq

yeah FF2 has a persian looking character called Minwu, but that was back in the days when FF characters weren't really developed properly.
