Yes,they're awesome!
No,bring back Bahamut.(And not as an airship...)
They're okay.
As long as they're just as effective.
Well, I love those new Summons (Mateus and Chaos mainly <3), but since I didn't play XII, I can't have an opinion about them being useful or not.
But in other FFs, usually, Summons (the command; it's obvious that Espers and GFs _are_ essential, for magic and Junction, respectively) never were THAT useful. Mainly in FFIV, where Square made the stupid error of putting Rydia in the Black Mage/Summoner class. Lv3 elemental spells, Meteo and maybe Flare outclass Leviathan and Bahamut (the only two summons that are worth your attention, damage-wise). And aside of "FFII" of SNES, Asura is not so useful. I mean, I've yet to find a usefulness for Protect in this game. Or a situation where Asura's multitarget revive comes just when you need it. @_@
And, why would FFXII 's Summons be useless? What do they do in battle? I can't find a good explanation, not even on GameFAQs.

They're great, but personally I'm just psyched over the return of the terms esper and magicite.
and the crystals. this FF seems to have the crystals just like FF4 and 5. this game is going to be great for the fans. espers, magicite and crystals. this is great.

I really like that they're bucking the Efreet/Shiva/etc. trend in order to pay respect to relatively underappreciated games such as FFIV and FFT. Also, it was stated in an interview that their specific reason for placing former villains in the role of summoned beasts was to give the players of the original games the sense that they're controlling something truly powerful, which is a pretty clever tactic.
Oooooo i like the lightnin lizard!

Adrammelech is more of a goat, really.
When they are summoned (using a full mp bar), they replace two characters. The summoner is left with the summon. The summoner can heal the summon as the summon fights. The summon will attack the enemies until their timer runs out, or they die. If their timer runs out, they do an awesome finishing move. Apparently, the summons tend to be of little use against enemy bosses - hence my disappointment.
I think the new Summons/Espers are alright, though a problem I have is how (SPOILER)Chaos, Zeromus, Exdeath, Adrammalech and Altima don't really look like what they did in FFI, FFIV, FFV and FFT (unless Altima is based on FFTA's Altima, not FFT's), so if it wasn't for their names, I couldn't recognize this tribute to the older FFs.

WARNING:Slight,Possible,Maybe,Kind-Of Spoilers in this post.
I went digging and discovered that some Espers won't do their finishing move until certain requirements are met.
For example:Ultima will only perform her finishing move(Perfect Ultima),unless her AND the summoner's HP is at critical levels.
Zodiac will only perform his special move(Last Eclipse),if the summoner is petrified.
They're are some others too.

What Kishi said.
And even if I didn't think that, the answer would be obvious.
Though Famfrit/Mateus don't really look too much like Cloud of Darkness/Paramekian Emperor...![]()
