Woman's voices can sound emotional, mature, and beautiful. A man's voice can also express the same exact emotions and ideals. However, if I am to listen to a "beautiful" song, soft and gentle, I would prefer a woman's voice. I have found that both males and females can have very wide ranges, and both can do most types of music. It's really what you feel like listening to.
I woman's voice in hard rock or metal sounds slightly different that a man's, naturally. Is one better than the other? I'm not sure. I think that most male's have a better suited voice simply because their tones are naturally lower. But that doesn't bar all women singers in the hard rock scene - Otep, for instance, can sing/scream/growl just as well as any other male rocker.
Really, I think that women and men have somewhat preset ranges of what they can sing, but it is never to be said that women cannot do this, or visa versa. It's just sometimes that a women singing a particular type of music, like in the sense of Otep, are almost something of an anamoly.
It's difficult to say what I prefer really. It seems that my music library (501 artists, 94 genres, 1200+ albums, 90.28 gigs) is a little more geared in having male vocalists. But then again, my music tastes are set to having Industrial, EBM, Metal, Rock, and Trip-hop be my favorites.
