This will only work sometimes, and when it does work it is only prolonging the life, not fixing the problem. You'll find yourself doing this more and more frequently until it doesn't work anymore. Once you start getting disc-read errors it's a downward spiral, and only a matter of time before your PS2 will die completely. There is no way to truly fix it aside from having the lasers replaced altogether, and at that point you might as well just buy a new one and hope for a more reliable model.
