Trouble on ff7

i have a action replay 4 ps1 and when i try to put the code in it wont work and i dont know if iam entering it wrong or wat the deal is. i also have a gameshark 4 ps1 and when i enter the code i always have 2 start the game over 2 get it to work, it wont work it if i just try to load it from where i left off am i doing anything wrong i just need help oh yea and what is a debug thing i dont get it can u tell me
