That's part of what keeps me from getting other people to adopt it. It's a shame, too, because it's people who just can't keep themselves out of trouble on Windows, so I'm fixing their computer every couple o f months as a result of them using it.
Actually, you aren't. It's relatively painless to remove it, too.
I dislike Windows on principle that it's really expensive. Like, $100 for a license that I can only use across three computers, and then I have to buy a new copy. My old Win98SE CD (OEM, at that) let me install unlimited times on unlimited computers. Their licensing scheme just seems a little ridiculous, even though it's in attempt to stop piracy - but really, if I knew I could buy a license and not have it worthless after three installs, I would get a real copy. It's just not economic for me at the current license model.
That's seriously like 2/3s of why I try to use Linux.
Windows is pretty good. I've never had any heavily upsetting problems with it.
GEM Desktop is Where It's At, though. (mostly due to nostalgic reasons)
I still don't understand how people manage to crash their windows installations all the time.
everything is wrapped in gray
i'm focusing on your image
can you hear me in the void?
I hate when I forget that the windows are open and it rains. Then everything gets all wet.![]()
What's so hard about "fixmbr" using the Windows repair command line?
Oh, and GRUB is much more powerful than the Windows bootloader. I never have any problems editing menu.lst after a kernel compile.
clout I believe was making reference to the RPM-centric environment of Redhat. RPMs are terrible for package management compared to .deb.
It's not a Linux problem. By default GRUB writes itself to the master boot record. fixmbr just rewrites the mbr with the Windows installation. It's also possible to boot straight into Linux without GRUB.
Yast is terrible.
My audio occaisonally vanishes until I restart my laptop or I put it in Stand By...
My favorite is the fact that it breaks the file system via its dirty mount/unmount systems. Litterally; it is self destructive.
Mac OSX is prolly one of the greatest user friendly computers out there.
Ubunto sucks, I must say. I was horribly let down. It is easy, but its a bit ished up as well. I would rather go red hat, even though red hat sucks too.
The beutiful thing is, when I say linux, I am talking the OS, not the distros plumb full of shattily assemebled open source software, but a more carefully implimented Distro like Slackaware, or from scratch.
And since when are you stuck with Grub or Lilo w/o config? I don't ever really use grub to any other degree than install, but I know you can do a ton of configuration post install with lilo.
