Thread: Was there a point in making this game?

Default Was there a point in making this game?

~Alright the title is a little misleading, but's it's still on the same track.
First of all I have to say that I have barely played X-2 but I am officially starting the game tomorrow and not sure if I shoul be excited or a little bit scared.

See FF X is probably one of my favorite RPG's to come out on this gen of consoles. And I guess the reason that im scared to start X-2 is because it might ruin my experience of the over all FF X saga.

So my question to everyone who has played this game is this? After completing X-2 did your overall experience and love for the FF10 universe increase or decrease.

(I do have to appologize for my wording it's 3 a.m. and im not exactly at my brightest right now)

The game has a different atmosphere to X, it's more upbeat and silly. Everyone's happy now that Sin is gone, so alot of things have changed... Even though this is one of my faviroute games, I didn't like the way everyone's changed, but you can't expected everyone to be miserable forever...

So I suppose it's okay, oh and Yuna's come out of her shell now, which is actually quite scary.

This game will teach you more about Spira's past, and that an eternal calm is... Too good to be true lol.

The story isn't as in depth as X, and if you play through the game without any side quests then it's MUCH shorter. But the battle system is great, you should enjoy it (then again I know nothing about you).

Bear in mind alot of people hate X-2, I hope you dont become one of them

FFX-2 was what redeemed FFX for me. I mean, I think FFX was one of the worst FFs in the series, if not the worst, and I was worried FFX-2 would be even worse, being a cheap cashing sequel. However, I liked FFX-2 a lot. It was everything FFX wasn't, which made me almost automatically like the game. I like the battle system, I really liked most of the characters and the world of Spira is fun to explore.

What I also liked was the way the final battle did a bit of tribute to FFX, showing how much the characters have changed after FFX's final battle, and thank goodness SE allowed the player to save after the mini-game and the long dialogue before the final battle! In FFX, you need to do the mini-game and watch the long cutscene if you lose the final battle or want to play it again. After playing FFX-2, I somewhat started to appreciate FFX a bit too.

In some weird sense, it made me appreciate FFX more, but only because I hated FFX-2 so severely.

To sum it all up, I hated FFX-2. I thought it should not have been made, and it was just some way for Square to do a fanservice (which shouldn't be done anyways; pandering, anyone?), and to make assloads of cash (since FF sales have been slowly declining since FFVII). It wasn't terrible beyond words, but it wasn't up to the same quality that all of the other FF games are. I wish, I truly do, because then I would find this game redeemable, that I could say that the game was rushed, but I cannot. For it was not.

Don't say "ohh, but it's a sequel, so it should be graded differently." Wrong. There were many sequels that Square produced in games, so they surely must have had experience. Chrono Trigger/Cross, FFV/FFV Unlimited. Sure they might have been vastly different, that makes them no less worth a play (or illegal downloading), since they were of similar quality. Not only that, what about FFI and FFII? May not have been direct, but it's no less a sequel in a series. IV and IIIj? VII and VI?

I loved FFX, the plot, the atmosphere, the characters (part of the plot, I guess). The game was a challenge, even when seriously underleveled. It kept you interested until the end, and was deep and intricate with many subplots and a rich history that, if you could, felt like you could immerse yourself in it to no end. There was no hope, but you never despaired. I had an obligation to myself, not to let it end the way it ends, but what's done is done. And lastly, maybe this seems like a typical boorish male response, but I LOVED Rikku. Pure <3. Intelligent, in some cases, wise, and really hot.

Then you get down to FFX-2. The game felt like an unfinished smattering of crap that throws away everything you fought for in FFX and completely changes it into something that really does just seem like Square wanted your money. Low difficulty. I'm not there for that; for you see, I want an experience, not some childish hack not worth my money. Sex appeal; what is this, some Charlie's Angels knockoff just to justify putting in what they put? If I wanted to see something like this, I would go and watch porn. Literally.

They took my favorite character, and STRIPPED her (not unlike pornography) into this dumb walking collection of sticks without any brain cells or clothes, whatsoever. She's no less physically attractive, but her value has diminished from priceless to around ten dollars worth in Pesos. And Pesos aren't exactly known for their international value. Playing the game soon felt like it wasn't an experience, just some obligation to the game after a few hours. Where was the sense of history, or deep thought? Where was the challenge? If I could have, I would have ripped out my controller right then and there and screamed, but if I had, I would've broken the PS2.

I know the FFX-2 fangirls are going to scream "NUUUUUUUUUUUU," but the truth is the truth. If you said "but once you get past Charlie's Angels" -- HAH! I beg to differ; I got past it (but I'll still use it to justify criticism), and I still found the game a worthless piece of crap. In fact, it didn't even occur to me until AFTER I finished the game. Thank God the poison that burned away the quality of FFX-2 wasn't there to render my love of FFX into a steaming pile of garbage. If it had, I would have lost all faith in the FF series as a whole.

However, there's nothing you can do, until you play the game, and judge for yourself. The only thing I hate worse than a FFX-2 fangirl (or boy) that is blind to the game's faults, or pretend that they aren't there, is people who criticize without having played the game at all. Unfortunately, this also applies to all of the FF fanboys/girls, who would never consider playing the old games, simply because they have been spoiled by the new generations.

After I finished 10-2 I liked 10 more (like someone else said, seeing the drop in quality in the sequel made me appreciate the original more), but the poignancy of its (10's) ending was kind of ruined for me because I knew it wasn't the REAL ending to Tidus'/Yuna's story >_<.

But yeah, I think you should just try it. Some people really like it, some obviously really hate it, I'm in between. I thought the first chapter was painful to get through, but the game got pretty interesting (imo) after that. And getting 100% completion is definitely not worth the effort, so just do the missions that sound fun to you (besides those you have to do) and find the Perfect Ending on YouTube or something

I personally think "hate" is too strong a word. If you liked FFX, you'll either like X-2 or like X all the more. That's all there is to it.
I didn't think the EXPERIENCE of X-2 was that horrible. Perhaps the main characters could have acted a little less like the sorority whores in your average high-school/college adolescent drama flick.
IMSO, the sequel probably would have had more success as a movie or a miniseries on television.

Games are for entertainment purposes, so if you aren't being entertained then no game has a point at all. If you're flexible and very forgiving, you will probably find a point to X-2, but it will most likely not be topping your favorite games ever list.

I had enough fun with it that I enjoy it. It didn't detract from X for me much. They feel so different when I'm playing X I just ignore X-2 even exists actually. When I play X-2 it feels more like fanfiction than a sequel, but I like it anyway

I get the feeling that there were no plans for a sequel when FFX was being made. That would explain (SPOILER)the end of Sin, Summonable Aeons, and Tidus' poignant exit from Spira. It's like trying to write a sequel to FFVI without Kefka or Espers. I think FFX ended on the perfect note and to produce a sequel after the fact was unneccessary.

In addition, as was previously noted, the characterization of the carryover FFX characters was generally disappointing. Rikku's silly to start with, but a gun-totin' pop star version of Yuna is not an improvement over the shy but strong-willed Summoner. The loss of (SPOILER)Auron is also acutely felt.

I found the new characters in FFX-2 a lot more successful, partly because I didn't carry any previous expectations of them. I thought Leblanc and her henchmen were great, as was Gippal and Balarai. Lenne and Shuyin provided a nice counterpoint to Yuna and Tidus.

There actually was a lot to like about the game, plot and characterization aside. The battle system, flexible jobs, mini-games were all enjoyable. I'm sure that isn't enough for a lot of people though.
