If Square went back to random encounters every 2 seconds and a story that included "go collect the crystals and save the world" and not much else I would be pissed off. I think they got better, much better, not worse.
Edit: I also dislike that I see constantly "Square is just about good graphics now." Why on earth would Square make their games ugly on purpose. I gaurantee half the people who hated X would love it if it came out during the Snes times, with the same story and battle system, and was ugly (though it would have amazing graphics for the time, so the whole logic is a little weird).
