The Morph command is capable of changing certain enemies into items. However (normally) the amount of damage you do against an enemy when using the Morph command is 1/8th of your regular attack damage. The major exception to this is Yuffie's conformer weapon, which will do significantly more damage than any other weapon due to the way it calculates it's damage (under most circumstances). This is most prevelant against the enemies found in the Sunken Gelinka, who are a source (pardon the pun) of many sources, including Magic Sources, Mind Sources, Speed Sources and Luck Sources, which can only be morphed from enemies found in the Gelinka (beyond Disc 2 Whirlwind Maze).

Basically, if you reduce an enemies HP to 0 using the Morph command, they will turn into an item. Not all enemies will turn into items.

As Maxx said, Morph's power is usually 1/8 that of a normal attack. Exceptions to this are Yuffie's Conformer, which deals normal damage, Vincent's Death Penalty, which has a power of 10/16 normal damage, plus a bonus. The other weapons which gain bonuses such as Yoshiyuki, Powersoul and the other ultimate weapons also deal more than 1/8 normal damage.

Morph isn't a long range attack, but the damage isn't reduced if the enemy is in the back row and the user has a short range weapon.

Also, you can never get a Critical hit with Morph.
