The only controller I've ever called by a name other than '[system name] controller' is the Wavebird. Since it's the standard controller for the console, it seems silly to spend time coming up with a name for it, but whatever.
I usually just point and say "Can you hand me that, please?"
Dual Shock was a pretty stupid name as well. SIXAXIS is okay, but only because it is a palindrome.
I really don't care about what the controller is called. I'm never going to say "Hey, could you pass me that SIXAXIS?", assuming I ever get a PS3. The only controller I will call by a name besides (system) controller is the Wiimote.
Also, I no longer consider 1Up to be reliable, anyway.
