From my experience, axes are lots of damage, but poor accuracy.

Wow, I love how this game is focusing on weapons and characters being able to use different kinds. Rather then the typical "They all got swords!...except the monk and dragoon dude, they get gloves and spears!"
Hmmm perhaps I should try an entire game of FFXII without a single sword. XD Would make for some interesting game play I think.

Axes/Hammers:
(SPOILER)At the beginning of the game, axes/hammers is less seen but later on (Approximately when you're going to get your Velias), axes/hammers shows its true potential. Since then, Axes/Hammers have always been the weapon with the best attack available.
FFXII is different, Axes/Hammers does not have poor accuracy, it can hit like a normal weapon. You can also equip shields when you have axes/hammers equipped (If you equip Spears, Bows or Guns, you cannot equip shields, -less defense-). Here's the catch of axes/hammer:
a) Axes/Hammers can do a damage that is more than 20 swords can do but can also do a damage that is less than a 10 Strength (Stat) character.
b) Don't let them bug you, since I always get high damage instead of low damage, if you're screwed with Axes/Hammers, Sword is your best choices but sword sucked for being way too expensive.
c) Axes/Hammers is also expensive like Swords but worth your money.

I don't know if it's just me but I think that the Treaty Blade looks like the ultima weapon from Kingdom Hearts 2
