The actual self-harm thing about emo's is actually a misconception. While it's used in emo bands before, if my facts (and why I have any actual facts about emo's I will never know) are right, it's not an actual key competent. Emo's are melodramatic though.
Emos are people who are emo about rock? You do know using the word you're defining in the definition isn't a good idea, right?
Emo is short for emotional. Emo music tends to be melodramatic and depressing. Now the emo music has branched off into a subculture in which the melodrama and 'depression' finds it's way into a person's persona. Self harm is used by bands, but it's not a definite element like a textbook definition.
In short, the emo is incredibly emotional, wear tight (males wear girl) pants, khaki (sp?), black, and other such things. They're also known to be comfortable with homosexuality and being homosexual/bisexual.

Emo still doesn't mean that you dress in tight pants, black, and is comfortable with homosexuality. It means you're very emotional, and that comes in a lot of flavours. Emotional people might want to listen to emotional music, what a shocker... And emotional people might harm themselves because their emotions are sometimes too strong to contain.
I think it's silly to use the term emo to classify a group of people that dress in a particular way or have similiar opinions. It's a state of mind.
