Thread: His Dark Materials

  1. #1

    Default His Dark Materials

I love these books (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass).
I think it's definitely the best trilogy I've ever read, hands down. Philip Pullman is a smurfing genius, and I have a signed copy of The Amber Spyglass.

The Golden Compass is my favorite, just because of the setting and the way it begins, but the others are still way above most fantasy books.

    What do you think?

The last two episodes of Doctor Who referenced these novels quite extensively. Ergo they're super cool.

Northern Lights was called The Golden Compass in America? That's unusual.

I didn't understand the hype behind Pullman's books when I first read them, but when I picked them up again a couple of years ago they made a much better impression. The Dark Materials trilogy is very well plotted, and I'd very much like to read it again when I have some spare time in the future.

Yeah that always bothered me. Northern Lights is a better title!

I only read the first book, and I'm stopping there. I didn't absolutely hate it or anything, but I didn't think it was at all as good as I had heard. Plus, I'm super duper sick of the whole young kids being able to do extraordinary things and not die right away like they should. ;D That and I hated Lyra. Silly strong-willed man-girls. I have no problem with strong women, but I felt that she was such a cliche character. Sucks cause the books did sound really good! I loved the idea behind it. Maybe they get better with each one but oh well.

They were good books, but they didn't strike a particularly powerful chord in me. I couldn't identify with the characters...though I must say I like Will the best. I don't know...I UNDERSTOOD, them, but I couldn't connect.

Well....it wasn't supposed to be a factual book. Just some people decided to believe it. It's written really convincingly so I don't blame them.

The book rocked. The film was worst than....eating your children.

I havent read the books but I went to the theatre to watch them. Didnt think they were anything special, Timothy Dalton was playing someone, guess it was worth going...

    The book rocked
the da vinci code was written with the notion of teens readin it so they cud say...."hey look you guys..i jus read this really big book..."......its basic....and written with short capters so the less than gifted people can read it easily........but thats jus my opinion.........and i thought an intellectual such as yourself quin wud have thought the same.........
