Spirit of Wonder: Nineteenth century setting, mad inventors and a Chinese martial artist landlady. What more could you want?

What's Michael: Humorous look at cats and the humans that love (or hate) them.

You're Under Arrest: Often overshadowed by the more famous Oh My Goddess, but both are excellent. The adventures of a female team of traffic cops. Balances action and humor nicely.

Pet Shop of Horrors: A hotheaded cop investigates a mysterious and effeminate pet shop owner that sells disturbingly humanlike pets that come complete with Tales From the Crypt-style morality lessons. Although my favorite part is the relationship between the cop's kid brother and a three headed dragon.

Maison Ikkoku: Although I like a lot of Takahashi's work this is still my favorite. Mainly because I can relate to many of the characters. A struggling college student falls in love with his new landlady, but finds a lot of humorous obstacles to romance.

    I highly suggest Chobits!
And someone else recommended the Wallflower! It's hilarious and morbid!

Besides the highly endearing cast, Maison Ikkoku is commendable for being the only one of Takahashi's serial works that actually has natural character development and plot progression. In other words, it managed to shirk all of that "let's drag this crap out for thirty-plus volumes with story gimmicks, a new Mary Sue character every five chapters, and <i>constant unresolved romantic tension forever</i>" nonsense for which she's infamous.

Well, it has been out for like...20 years now? I think it was first published in Japan in '86 or something.
