I like metal. Not fussed really.

My only problem is all these sub-systems. I just don't see a need to but everything in a catagory.

Sub-genres? And of course we run into the typical "no need for categorization sheep/drone" :rolleyes2

There is a need to categorize metal into subgenres because each of them sounds entirely different from the others. That is why there is a need for it.

I loves me some death metal. Tie for my favorite genre of music.

My favorite bands would be:

Cannibal Corpse (#1 death metal band ever!)
Necrophagist
Amon Amarth
Nile
Deicide

I'm a big fan of Death. Chuck was friggin awesome, I particularly like his voice on later recordings, as well as the prog elements they introduced. Great band. DOn't mind a bit of Malevolent Creation or Deicide either.

Oooh. Quite a nice list you have there. There are quite a few from your list that I like, but I don't really have time to write them down.

That I agree with. I was going to rant about that at the start, but I couldn't be arsed to moan for a few paragraphs. Thank you.

Heh. Me too. Though I like the latter Death moreso than the earlier Death. But I still love them on the whole, & Chuck was a great songwriter & had a good voice.

Nice to see there are a few underground music fans here. You know what is good for you.

DM isn't called underground in America most likely, well perhaps not Florida & so.

Wikipedia knows about metal. Vocals do not determine a genre, Opeth are progressive metal. Not prog. death, because the core of their music isn't death metal.

It is true that most of Opeth's material is not progressive death metal. However, they have material that is (parts of the Deliverance album being the most obvious), which is why I put them in my list. They are also occasionally death influences on some other albums aswell. You can claim that songs like Master's Apprentices and Wreath are not progressive death metal, I will just not agree with you and my disagreement won't be a mistake.

I don't really know what "death metal" is *exactly* but it sounds scary.... xD I imagine it being quite heavy and maybe screamy/shouty although I don't really know. It seems to me like it would be angry music, and I don't often feel angry these days. But I'm just assuming, I've probably never really listened to any....

I don't know Thine Eyes Bleed, but Arch Enemy are melodic death metal.

Melodeath more so, which is much more power metal than it is death metal.

Melodic death, such as Quo Vadis though is truely death metal.

Melodeath = melodic death. I have never seen any distinction between the two. Many of the modern melodic death bands have striven away from the genre, but if you listen to what the bands sounded like when genre formed, you'll hear that the main influence was death metal (perhaps some thrash here and there, but hardly any power metal).

Melodeath SHOULD mean melodic death, but it doesn't. Melodeath refers to the Gothenburg sound, which is basically Iron Maiden melodies downtuned more, and with harsh vocals over it.

When I listen to Anata, I hear melodic death metal. I hear death metal with a great focus on melody. When I hear In Flames, I hear Iron Maiden with harsh vocals.

Most of the Gothenburg scene is indeed not particulary death metal, but there's still some material, like some At the Gates, which is more melodic death than power or thrash metal.

And I'm not sure I'd call Anata melodic death metal. Good band though, but their former drummer was being quite rude when I bought their second demo from him.
