Well yeah, At The Gates is indeed death metal. smurfing Slaughter of the Soul is horrible though D:

The Infernal Depths Of Hatred is pretty damned melodic, it focuses alot of the melodies anyways.

No matter how much you and Sigmund Freud want it to be, 'mother' is not a curse word.

Wikipedia knows about metal. Vocals do not determine a genre, Opeth are progressive metal. Not prog. death, because the core of their music isn't death metal.
No need for that. I was just saying. Well, I'm not going to argue it over & over. You have your opinion & I have mine. *Sits on fence*

DM was created by Death. [Not Possessed.. Although they helped a bit]
It [was] formed / evolved from thrash metal & has influences from classical & jazz. The theme for DM is obviously suggested by the title of the genre. Most DM bands tend to sing about death, gore blah blah & this can put most people off the genre completly. But not all bands sing about that. The band Nile base their lyrics & music around Eygptian Mysticism & religion & such, & a band called Decapitated sing about very dark themes.

You could say DM is aggressive. Most of it includes fast tempos, & heavy riffs. It is most notabable for its technicallity - Different time signatures, key changes, tempo changes, structure & the like. Which would explain why some bands have jazz, classical influences. Also a lot of DM bands downtune their instruments. Quite alot of bands tune in baritone, whereas others tune 1 step down which enables fast playing. The drumming in DM will most usually include blast beats, & some bands have drummers who include jazz beats into their music [Death, Cryptopsy, & Immolation to name a few] The vocals are sung in a deep death grunt / growl. Which is more from the stomach than from the throat. Immolation & Nile's singers show a good example of a death grunt. A good example would be "Cookie Monster" style vocals. Imagine the cookie monster singing a song.. & there you have it. They are extremely low, but still the words that are said are hearable. DM is much heavier than heavy metal. A DM band would make Metallica sound like a rock band. Listen to Nile - Sacrifice Unto Sebek, & then Metallica & you'll notice the difference.

If you want to listen to some, listen to some late work by Death. A good reccomendation I'd say.

Rather than me write anymore inane babble, just have a look at wikipedia & you'll find a good description.

Death metal is a musical movement that was started by many bands from various locations that emerged around the same time in the mid-late 80s. It wasn't created by one single band, like Death. Death was one of the many transition bands between thrash and death metal.

EDIT: I just realized three essential classics are missing in my list. Corpse and Morbid who were among the first death metal bands ever, as well as Carbonized who made the earliest recordings I've heard that I would class as brutal death metal.

Aye. But Death more than most. Though certain thrash metal bands helped quite a bit.

EDIT: Corpse as Cannibal Corpse & Morbid as in Morbid Angel?

Yeah. Corpse's first demo was pretty early.

No, Morbid as in Morbid and Corpse as in Corpse.

Although Morbid Angel were really early too. Cannibal Corpse less so.

usually the case with death metal is I cannot pay attention and understand what is being sung. My question is "Are you even meant to listen to the lyrics if they're so fast alot of the time?" Strange yes, nonsense, 'fraid not. Once yar brains haf gone tuh scrambuld eggz git bak to meh. I end this post with a nice smilie!

My guess would be that your average DM listener doesn't pay that much attention to lyrics. A vocalist in death metal is essential, but I couldn't care less what he sings about (although that goes for all forms of music). I never understand why people dislike bands because they sing in a language or a manner that they cannot understand. If they want lyrics, they can go read a poem.

Possessed released Seven Churches while Death was still putting out thrash metal demos.
