    Default Public Service Announcement

I've read this term misused several times in these fora now, so I wanted to make a public service announcement on the subject:

There is no such thing as a PSX game.

The PSX is a suped-up PS2 that features an extra-large hard drive and is capable of recording tv shows, storing home videos and images and can surf the web. When the media first learned about the PS1, it was code named Playstation Experimental, and the media improperly called it the PSX. Since then people have improperly used the term "PSX" to refer to the PS1.

Again, there are PS1 games and PS2 games, but no PSX games.

Thank you and good night. :chef:

    what.

PSX is the name of a Sony media center, PVR and DVD recorder based on the PlayStation 2 video game console. It was released in Japan on December 13, 2003. There were plans to release it in other territories in 2004, but as of 2005, these plans appear to be postponed indefinitely.
psX was used to describe Playstation games in general, even before this media deal was to come out. There for, it wins. X was a variant for 1 or 2 as I understand it.

People keep telling me that saying PSX is all right, but I say PS1 just to be on the safe side.

Correct. PSX was the acronymn for PS1 before it was a PS1.

No, PSX was a term improperly coined by the media due to an internal name for the PS1 while it was being developed. This would be the same as referring to Wii games as Revolution games.

Nobody cares about the 'real PSX', so the general assumption for someone saying a 'PSX' game would be a PS1.

The 'X' can be a variable, since PS1 games can be played on the PS1, the PS2, the PS3, and quite possibly the "PSX" itself which had a PS2 inside.

The PS3 is really the PSX2, btw.

Yeah, the variable is why I gather PSX is used. If people only called em PSOne games it would ruin one of the best selling points of the PS2, its backwar compatability. That is, it would be ruined in the eyes of those whom were not so console litterate; ie: parents.

I've always referred to Playstation games as PSOne games.

Thanks for clearing that up, though.

I used to call the PSOne the PSX because that was the commonly used shorthand at the time, but ever since the actual PSX came out I've started using PSOne or PS1 to avoid confusion.

I always used PS1 or just PS for the first PlayStation, but I always knew what people meant when they said PSX.

Your PSA fails to convice. PSX is accepted and normal language, whether it's accurate in the original context or not.
