I've never really been asked, but I think it'd be best to kind of tell it to them based on what's appropriate of their age, rather then flat out tell them/lie.
Lie to them and tell them some sort of fairy tale or anything else non-sensical.
Tell it to them straight, and shatter the tiny, protected world they've been living in.
Run away screaming.
