The story takes place a about a year later after the game ends (Yeah, I know it's cliche and similiar to Advent Children but I can't allow too much time to pass or it just won't work). Squall is trying to restore SeeD with the help of Selphie (Head of the Trabia Garden restoration) and Seifer (head of the Galbadia restoration, though there is a lot of bad blood between the other schools about Seifer being in charge so Irvine is also their helping).
With Centra returning from it's isolationism the other countries have become very agitated and worried especially since Centra is far more advanced than the other countries. President Laguna brings a message of peace but the other countries are too scared to think straight. After Galbadia had ravaged the other countries and with all but one Garden still left to hire SeeD from, the other countries begin to have clashes with each other in hopes of building enough military power to counter Centra (cue new villian who takes advantage of the political uprisings) Squall takes it upon himself to try and stop these clashes from getting out of hand. With the few remaining SeeD, Squall is constantly battling around the world. In order to do this, Squall must use the GF's. As the battles wage on Squall slowly begins to lose himself. The GF's power steals his memories and he's beginning to forget small things. Zell notices first (he's always on the frontline helping) but he makes a promise to Squall that he will try to keep Rinoa from knowing about it. Eventually Squall even begins to forget about her.
Meanwhile, Seifer begins to see more of Rinoa. He's been given patrol duty to fight off all the monsters from the Lunatic Pandora incedent. Rinoa is helping to restore Winhill and Timber. They begin to reminisce about their former relationship but issues arise when soldiers belonging to the New Galbadia government (led by our villian) try to capture Rinoa "the Successor of the Sorcerous" Seifer protects his "princess" like a Knight would and their relationship begins to become complicated. Seifer eventually escorts Rinoa to Balamb Garden to be protected by Squall whose memory is becoming even more fractured. Rinoa sadly watches as Squall begins to destroy himself slowly by relying too much on the GFs. Seifer battles his own personal feelings about Rinoa. Eventually an attempted assasination on Laguna leads to Rinoa being captured by the villian. Rinoa is used as a unifying force for the freightened countries and it seems a world war is enevitable. Squall and company join forces with a more moderate faction within the Galbadia government and try to overthrow their new Prime Minister and rescue Rinoa. Meanwhile Laguna and his cronies are trying to stop the Centra government from entering the war and return to peacetalks.
By the end, the villian has taken Rinoa's powers which leads into a massive battle that ends with Squall sacrificing the last of his memories to rescue Rinoa. In the aftermath, Squall continues to battle cause it's all he seems to know. Rinoa is devastated and watches as Seifer, who can no longer stand by and watch Squall hurt Rinoa's feelings, fights his rival in an epic battle. Squall begins to question who he is and why he is fighting, for whom am I fighting for. Rinoa's voice finally reaches him and Squall breaks free from the GF's curse. A long overdue kiss, some clapping, and we roll credits which show various scenes like Laguna shaking hands with the new Galbadian President, Zell and his girlfriend, Irvine and Selphie finishing up their repective schools. Cid and Edea's new orphanage, and any other heartwarming thing you would want.
There are some possibilities for FFVIII to have a sequel, this was my idea. :mog:
