Why do people hate Sony so much?

Sony has done a lot for gamers, probably more then Nintendo

I don't think Nintendo would be quite as innovative and groundbreaking if Sony hadn't dominated the videogame market throughout the late 90's and early 00's. As with all things, competition drives companies to create better consoles with better games, and that's exactly what Ninty, Sony and Microsoft are doing right now.
