How stupid was Duke Barinten?
Rafa mentions that he killed their parents and adopted them because he wanted Rafa's Heaven Skill, and Malak's Hell Skill.
Seriously, did he ever actually watch anyone use those skills? I don't think he did because if he had known how useless they were, he probably wouldn't have gone to such trouble to get his hands on them.

Maybe he planned on using them in battles with horribly uneven terrain so that their spells would only effect the panel enemy units were standing on?
It's kept me up at night before.
Maybey he realized that with proper forethought Heaven & Hell Skills are extreamly powerful, and only a simpleton would underestimate thier power. :meditate:
I think he just wanted to loot the treasures in the Deep Dungeon. Malak just had to go along for the ride.
A friend of me said: Burning a village just to get hell and heaven skill, how ridiculous. I would only burn a village for math skill.
Well, you have to think about it really. They don't live like how we play them. There are no panels, just power. So, Maybe The heaven and hell skills were powerful to them because they were rare.
The game strongly implies that Barinten was acting out of lust for Rafa as much as lust for power:
