ok, I was playing the Japanese version fighting the penultimate final bosses (you know, the girl and guy right below Kefka), Edgar was sleeping, then suddenly, a dog appeared in front of him and woke him up. It looked grey, not black, so it wasn't Shadow's dog. Shadow wasn't even in my party, yet. What triggered that?

It was a sheep. When you arent awakened in a long while, it happens.

It's actually a tapir.

Yeah, I've seen it before. And yes, it's part of one of Mog's dances (on top of appearing randomly) so you may have seen it before anyway.

Hmmm, I'm at the end of the game and haven't ever seen this take place before. So it occurs when all of your characters are under the "Sleep" spell?

I see it almost everytime I fight Chadrarnook.

The tapir's only showed up twice for me. During Chadarnook, and during the top tier of the final boss before Kefka.

Yeah, I was on the final tier before Kekfa. No, just Edgar was asleep, and it went in front of him and woke him up.

On my first play through, I never encountered the tapir once, but when I was replaying the game recently, it appeared quite a few times. It happens very quickly, and the first time I only caught a glimpse of it and I decided I was just imagining it.

so does being asleep for too long trigger it? i'll have to try this at some point.
