Perhaps I can convert you into a prog rock fan Sapphire Star. This site has free streaming samples of some of my favourite bands, and I've compiled a list of samples of some bands. For each link scroll down to the grey box and play them. Be warned that it's all very expirimental.
Pink Floyd Best one: Time. (This selection is really not a very fair view of the band. If you want a good sampler ranging through the whole discorgaphy of the band, get this best of.)
Emerson Lake and Palmer Best one: Hoedown
Frank Zappa Best one: Peaches en Regelia
King Crimson Best two: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Cirkus
So maybe not the songs I would have chosen for the best samples of the artists, but if you like what you hear let me know. Or you can look for some of the albums in your music store. The site also has reviews for literally every prog rock album in existence, and they're all fairly informative. Artist: The Dresden Dolls
Album: Yes Virginia or The Dresden Dolls
Genre: Punk/Dark Cabaret
An interesting sound developed by two people, singer/pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer occassional guitarist and vocalist Brian Viglione. Their sound is ridden with driving rythms and stabs and spunky, explicit and clever lyrics. There is the humorous yet rebelious nature of Punk intertwined with piano and drums.
Truly worth listening to.
Notable songs are Coin Operated Boy and Sing.
Artist: Flogging Molly
Album: Swagger or Drunken Lullabies
Genre: Irish American Celtic Punk, but we can just call it smurfing pirate music
It's like listening to a drunken brawl at an Irish bar on a pirate ship, what more can I say? There is an accordian, fiddle, drums, guitars, spoons, etc... It has the punk spirit with clever lyrics and a seemingly chaotic yet masterfully woven beat. It makes you want to get a pirate ship and dance.
Seriously, listen to them.

Album: Gypsy Punks
Genre: Gypsy Punk mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub
Take traditional gypsy music from Eastern Europe, and then put in a place where there can be a frenetic, fantastic stage show. The songs are catchy, and you can definately feel the playful, dancable nature of the songs. The members of the band are an ecclectic bunch, and it simply adds to the show and sound.
One listen to Start Wearing Purple will have you realize the nature of these guys.
Artist: Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI)
Album: Any of them really, though I like anything after Tight more personally
Genre: Techno-punk
Seriously, MSI is basically like crack for your ears.
The words fly out there, and they range from soft to angry, frenetic, calm and everything else. The synths and drums and everything else stabs, stops, weaves, etc like someone on crack with organization. It shouldn't work, but it does.
It's loud, it's offensive, it's fun, and it's bound to have you feely slightly crazy.
I love it.
Artist: Modest Mouse
Album: Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Genre: Indie Rock
You've probably heard of Modest Mouse. If you haven't then allow me to explain:
Their songs are commonly fueled by satire, nonchalant appeal, the music is usually pretty linear, though it has its moments of craziness. It has a feeling of either driving about without any real direction or simply sitting back and musing over the world. Some songs are danceable or capable of moving people about, but the album seems to be what one would describe as a relaxed mood, but not in the sense of volume. Rather, in the sense of attitude.
It's definately one I enjoy.
Notable songs include Float On or The Ocean Breathes Salty.
Well, that's what iTunes churned out with its random feautre for five artists - I may post more later.

Flogging Molly never gets old for me. The Dropkick Murphies are really great too, if you like that kind of stuff.
But if you want to listen to punk rock, please listen to the Dead Kennedies. "Chemical Warfare" "Holiday in Cambodia" and "Kill the Poor" are me favorites. You should also listen to the Misfits. They're new stuff is still good, despite the fact that they totally sold out. The old stuff though, is the best.
Outside of punk you need to be listening to Bob Dylan. On a regular basis. If you haven't hear Mr. Tambourine Men you've missed out on one of the best song ever written.
Also check out two bands called Neutral Milk Hotel and Badly Drawn Boy.

Artist: Skinny Puppy
Recomended Album(s): Too Dark Park, The Process, The Greater Wrong of the Right, Last Rights
Genre: Industrial
Inspired by the music of Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and others, Skinny Puppy experimented with electronic recording techniques and methods, composing multi-layered music generally with synthesizers, found sounds, drum machines, manual percussion, tape-splices, traditional instruments, distortion, and samplers. Whereas many contemporary remixes and re-edits of songs were created in order to make a song more suitable for dancing or different radio formats, Skinny Puppy approached remixing and re-editing as an artistic process of reinterpreting compositions, often using remixes to push their sound into styles of ambient, dub and techno.
Skinny Puppy has been widely noted for their bizarre and confrontational live performances, for which every concert was designed to challenge the notions and beliefs of all who attended. Their music has had some acceptance in dance clubs because of its danceable beats, but has had little play on commercial radio. The band had very little commercial success outside of Canada, but their influence on industrial and electronic music in general is immense.

Genre: Industrial/EBM (EBM stands for Electronic Body Music)
:wumpscut: is dark, houses ominous synths merged with driving beats and signature growling vocals. Samples and synths and rythms are all merged together to form a driving, forceful beat accompanied by Ratzinger's distinctive German growl.
The songs evoke imagery of horror, mystery, bizzare situations, and hectic, frenetic emotion and thought. Sex, religion, war, people and society, politics, and psycholigy crawls its way into the songs and albums, and Ratzinger is not afraid to show such things. He uses samples from war, speeches, pornography, and just about everything else to set an interesting texture sometimes.
The sound ranges from loud, fast, threatening, to sometimes deathly calm, quiet, and enigmatic.
I highly suggest listening to :wumpscut: if you are interested in the Inusrial/EBM genre at all.

Genre: Electrogoth/Industrial
German seems to have a method in weaving mystery, dramatics, emotion, imagery of horror and world issues like no other langauge. Das Ich is dark, forboding, and has a mysterious, violent undertone to its sound. The music commonly hovers on a sound of panic with strings that pitch and growl, while Stefan Ackermann and Bruno Kramm sing, growl, and whisper the lyrics. Heavy, constant drums and beats build and help shape the sound.
Overall, it's an interesting, boding, ominous trip. There is the feeling of fear, violence, helplessness, power, confusion, satire, and general mystery in all of their songs.
Very, very interesting, I would at least give them one listen through.

Android Lust is the Industrial solo project of Shikhee, combining elements of rock, industrial, gothic and classical styles into a blend of music that she describes as "electronic and dark." Her music has themes of hurt, loneliness, lust, rejection, impatience, anger, and confusion.
With the help of guest musicians on flute, live drum performances, viola, and touches of her own acoustic guitar, Shikhee adds an unconventional layer of organic warmth to Android Lust's trademark palette of icy electronics.
Android Lust is as diverse in presentation as it is in subject matter, running the emotional gamut from loss to discovery, from regret to carnivorous loathing. Android Lust weaves in elements of punk, pop, and rock to create what can only be described as neo-industrial.
Synths and Shikhee's voice are the prominent aspects of Android Lust. Bold, rich synths follow the thin, small, saturated voice of Shikhee. I say small not in the sense of volume, for her words are easily discerned, but rather due to the fact that many of the songs hold definate weight, and the synths create a wall of sound that makes you feel like you about to be drowned in the music.
It's a most pleasing experience, to feel completely surrounded and immersed in the music that she creates. In this way, you feel exactly what she feels.

My favourite bands of the moment are Static-X, Lordi and Megadeth. Basically metal, the three of 'em. might want to try them.
Also, my favourite album of the moment is The Dark Side of Phobos which you might want to have a look at. (Although the album Shadow Zone just might replace it as my number 1 album)
