"As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless,
uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?"
i never looked much into the Mario series unless it's one of the Mario Party games. i have always liked them better, but i can make an exception on the first three Mario Bros games...
Almost impossible for me to decide, but if I absolutely have to pick, it would be Super Mario Bros. Simply for the fact that it was the first game I ever played, and it was the one that turned me into this great geek that I am.
Yoshi's Island.

SMB4: SMW is best cause it was last 2D Mario.

Or Super Mario Land 2, for that matter.
SMB3, world or 64. They all brought hours of fun to me. I'm gonna go with sweet childhood memories and pick SMB3.
It would probably be Super Mario 64. I like it mainly because it makes you think of how to get to that star, it's fairly long, and the difficulty curve is set up well. The difficulty at the end is enough so that I don't blow through it within seconds, but low enough that I don't end up screaming wanting to punt my system off a rooftop.
Probably Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64. Man, I've spent countless hours playing those games.
Super Mario Bros. 3, duh! That game is classic. Way better then the first game.
