Indeed. The lite almost makes the original DS completely obsolete. The screen is definitely the best improvement. The redesigned buttons feel better in most situations, and it also 'matches' with Nintendo's new design for their d-pad/buttons. The Dpad on the GBMicro, DSlite and the Wii are all the same design, and possibly the same size.
I have a dead pixel on my Navy Blue DS, which is a normal thing for LCDs. One will happen in every several screens, it came up a lot in the DS lite because they sold so many of them :P
About gripping it, it takes a little adjusting to get used to it (especially after over a decade of Gameboy), but if you hold it lightly in your fingers instead of jamming you palms into it, it's much better. I mentioned this before :P I had a pic

The DSL has a more powerful battery, to accomodate the brighter screen settings. It actually lasts a lot longer than the DSP when the screen brightness is at its lowest (which is still brighter than DSP's).
I mentioned that it *almost* renders the original DS obsolete. If you already have the original DS, you're still getting the same games and all that. It's a strongly reccomended upgrade, but if circumstances prevent you from doing it it's fine to wait. If you never had a DS though, there's no reason to get the original, especially if they're the same price.
Smudges are minor, I just rub it between my t-shirt and it comes out shiny again. The GBA slot is a bit of an eyesore, but I can deal with it. If I am intending to play a GBA game though, I would usually bring my Micro with the game in there. Some of the DS expansions have been and will probably continue to be released in 2 versions. The DS Rumble Pak was re-released in a 'lite' size in Japan, as well as the DS Opera Browser. Only my 'Daigasso! Band Brothers' expansion pak is normal GBA size.
