If you brought Eiko then you should be alright regardless.

Be happy it wasn't Zidane, Vivi, Eiko AND Garnet, like I took.

Basically I used the useless three to keep Zidane alive until he reached trance. Two or three trances later and victory was mine!
none of the characters are useless, you just prefer the fighters to magic users alls it requires is a little training and they will be as good as your main four

If I was like Cloud I don't think I would have taken that test.

I think I took Zidane, Freya/Steiner (I can't remember which), Amarant and Eiko to Oeilvert. Eiko was actually useful for healing on my way to Oeilvert, and I did most of my leveling up in the area just before Oeilvert, so I could save items by having Eiko heal the party.

Not really. I just got passed that part and I had Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, and Aramant.

Did you keep an earlier save? Steiner and Vivi are far more useful left back in the Desert Palace, especially since Dagger is practically useless at this point in the game. My parties of choice:

    Oeilvert- Zidane, Quina, Freya, Amarant

Desert Palace- Steiner, Vivi, Eiko, Dagger

    I always liked this party:

    Zidane - Attack / Steal
    Freya - Jump / Rei's Wind
Quina - Attack / Earth Shake / White Wind
    Steiner - Attack

Magic attacks are very effective for training outside of the castle itself.
    Ogres give lots of EXP.

I had Zidane, Freya, Steiner, and Eiko. Eiko healed me on the way there, and in Oeilevet, I replaced her magic with items.

Quina is great for that part, especially if you have been working on its skills.
